Voice Over Internet Protocol or VoIP for short, is capable of providing benefits beyond just cost savings for mid to large companies. Implementing a VoIP system in your company can have it's risks and challenges as it affects one of the most commonly used business communication applications:

A simple yet vital check list that must be followed when planning to implement a VoIP system. By attending to all the points of this check list you’ll be ensuring the implementation of a efficient VoIP telecommunications system.
 

• Perform a network audit. Before contacting any consultants VoIP providers, plan ahead and do a network audit and assess any current needs. List any PC or endpoint that might be a weak link.
• Update your systems. Make sure that all your devices operating systems have been updated, that includes the PCs, mobile phones, Palm, laptops, etc. Especially if you intend using VoIP on your PC, DO REGULAR scandisk cleanups, defragmentation and clear any unnecessary load on your RAM
• Update Security. Check to see if the LAN / WAN (PC and server) security are up to date.
• Start with a Pilot. It is advisable to implement your VoIP in stages.
• Update all VoIP potential devices. Make sure to upgrade network switches, routers and other voip-capable devices.
• Educate employees. Make sure your employees have been made aware of spamming and phishing techniques.
• Talk to other companies. Find friends that have implemented VoIP at their companies, and find out about their experience.
• Know what to expect. While cost reductions may be one of the benefits of Implenting VoIP, other features and benefits might be just as important. Look at all the benefits your VoIP system of choice will offer you eg. Video surveillance, access control, remote maintenance, video conferencing ETC.
• Use Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Set up VPNs for remote locations or remote offices. Better still try obtaining a wireless internet provider that has a direct VoIP link into the VoIP platform, this ensures perfect voice quality without having to break out into the web which can affect speech quality if there is other heavy data usage on the same internet connection.
